IMPHAL, Jun 13 : Vice president of Manipur People's Party (MPP), Dr S Ibomcha  Singh has categorically stated that modernizing Lamphelpat and incorporating it under urban tourism project is crucial to attract tourists to Imphal  city.
In a statement, Dr Ibomcha opined that the same initiative, if implemented, will improve the socio-economy condition of the people living in Imphal city and its surrounding areas apart from beautifying the city.
Saying that Uripok is one such Assembly segment which is at the heart of Imphal city, he added that rapid shrinkage of Lamphelpat due to construction  of Government departments and private buildings, however, is causing harm to the people of the AC.
Flood overwhelms the people of Uripok whenever monsoon arrives due to encroachment at the Lamphelpat ecosystem, he said.
Though the then Congress Government had announced that 200 acres of land had been put on reserve to rehabilitate Lamphelpat, the same never materialised, Dr Ibomcha said and added that the same  assurance was also given by Chief Minister N Biren, but not yet delivered.
He then expressed desire for the Government to shift the department offices at Lamphelpat to Langol hill range, by declaring the latter as a regular forest and the NIT to either Waithou Hill or Ngariyan Hill for the benefits of all.
If Lamphelpat is developed to its potential, the problem of water scarcity and artificial flood being faced by the people in Imphal areas from time to time will also be solved to some extent, he noted and added that excess water from Nambul river can also be released to Lamphelpat during monsoon season.
If MPP is elected to power in the forthcoming Assembly elections, the foremost priority of the party would definitely be rehabilitation of Lamphelpat, he concluded.
