IMPHAL, Jun 18 : The Manipur People's Party (MPP) has urged the State Government to declare June 18 as a State holiday and observe it as a State function.
The MPP, in a press release, said it will be a fitting tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives on June 18 in 2001during a mass movement to uphold the territorial integrity of Manipur, if the State Government declares the date as a State holiday and  observe it as a 'State function'.
Commemorating the mass uprising against the 'Bangkok Declaration' on June 14, 2001 and the martyrdom of the 18 during the subsequent protest against the agreement which contains the phrase 'without territorial limit', the day is annually observed as the Great June Uprising-Unity Day by AMUCO and UCM, the release said while adding that MPP has also been participating in the observation every year.
As freedom fighters are honoured with State functions, June 18 should also be included as a State holiday in honour of those who made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard and protect the territorial integrity of Manipur, it continued.
