IMPHAL, Aug 8 : State Information Commissioner Dr Soibam Ibocha Singh (retd IPS) passed away today due to COVID-19. He was 63.
Born in 1958 at Soibam Leikai in Imphal East district and Dr Soibam Ibocha was was a lecturer at Maharaja Bodhchandra College (1979-1983) before joining Manipur Police as an MPS officer in 1983.
During his service in the Police Department, he served as Superintendent of Police of Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Chura-chandpur and Senapati and retired as IGP in 2018. He was awarded the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
After retiring from the police force, he was appointed as State Information Commissioner by Governor Dr Najma Heptulla on October 22, 2018.
Dr Soibam Ibocha was a multifaceted personality winning the Sahitya Aka-demi translation prize, State Literature Award, State Kala Akademi Award, Sharda Translation Award and Akoijam Chaoton & RK Muktasana Literature Award for his contribution in the literary field. He was also president of Rugby Football Manipur and senior vice president of Amateur Rugby Federation of India.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Works Minister Th Biswajit Singh condoled the sudden demise of Dr Soibam Ibocha and said the State has lost a great academician and a sport enthusiast who did his best for the betterment of the society.
The Manipur Information Commission (MIC) also condoled the demise of Dr S Ibocha and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
MIC also shared the grief of the bereaved family. MIC is also organising a condolence meeting at the office premise of MIC at 11.30 am on August 9.
