IMPHAL, Sep 1: A combined team of Narcotic Cell, Imphal East, Thoubal Commando, Andro Police Station and volunteers of Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA), Kshetrigao busted a brown sugar manufacturing unit at the residence of a Manipur Police Head Constable at Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai in the wee hours of today.
The arrested Head Constable has been identified as Md Mujibur Rahman (42) s/o of (L) Md Fazal Karim of Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai.
Briefing media persons at Porompat this afternoon, Imphal East SP N Herojit said that the joint team initially cordoned off the residence of Md Mujibur Rahman and seized many equipment used in manufacturing brown sugar at around 1.30 am
He continued that the seized items include three bags of suspected brown sugar, 11 plastic bags containing opium (kani), two plastic bottles of Ammonium Chloride (1 kg each), 250 litres of liquid for refining brown sugar etc.
Maintaining that the seized articles were estimated to be around Rs 90 crore in international market, the SP conveyed that the seized opium weighs about 430 kg while the suspected brown sugar weighs around 40 kg.
Mujibur Rahman has disclosed that Md Firoj (19) s/o Md Oli of Yairipok Tulihal Toubokpi and Md Hero of Thoubal Moijing were respectively the transporter of the raw materials and distributor of the refined brown sugar, the SP said and added that the two persons (Mujibur and Firoj) have also been handed over to Andro Police Station.
In a late report, Md Mujibur Rahman was produced before the JMIC Imphal East. The Court remanded him to 4 days Police custody.
