IMPHAL, Oct 15 : The general strike called by several militant groups including the CorCom and ASUK in denunciation of the alleged annexation of Manipur by India on October 15, 1949 disrupted normal life in the State.
On account of the general strike, all types of public transport services including inter-State and inter-district public transportation were suspended.
All major business establishments and commercial centres including Khwairamband Keithel remained shut even though some private vehicles were seen on the roads.
Schools as well as oil pumps remained closed.
Coupled with the general strike and Saturday being holiday for Government offices, traffic volume on all major roads of Imphal was quite sparse.
The general strike had some impacts in the hill districts too as there was no transport service between districts headquarters and Imphal.
However, there was no report of any untoward incident.
Nonetheless, police took up stringent security measures at different places, particularly at vulnerable areas.
