Anti-liquor protest continues unabated

IMPHAL, Oct 6 : Mounting pressure on the Govt to roll back the partial lifting of alcohol prohibition, the Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with local  women's organisations staged sit-in protests across various districts of the State today.
 At Okram Chuthek under Imphal East district, CADA Imphal East District Committee in collaboration with Chanurasing gi Yaipha Thourang Lup organised a sit-in protest at Ibudhou Naothingkhong Haraoshang.
During the protest, an unnamed meira paibi representative urged Chief Minister N Biren Singh to reverse the State Cabinet's decision to legalize alcohol.
Similarly, a sit-in protest was also staged at Mekola Bazar in Imphal West jointly organised by Kodompokpi Maning Leikai Women Development Association and CADA Imphal West District Committee today.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Lisham Bheigyabati, secretary, Kodompokpi Maning Leikai Women Development Association pointed out the widespread instances of alcohol abuse in every locality of the State. At this juncture, the State Govt's decision to legalize alcohol is totally unacceptable, she opined.
She further cautioned of prolonged agitation if the Government does not roll back the decision to legalize alcohol.
At Nambol, the Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) in association with Development & Protection, United Voluntary Organisation (DPUVO), Nambol, Nambol Apunba Nupi Lup and CADA organised a sit-in protest against alcohol legalization.
Keirak Maning Leikai Meira Paibi, Ereipak Eenat Chanura Loinasilon Wabagai Branch and CADA also staged a similar protest at Keirak Maning Leikai today.
At Thoubal district, sit-in protests were staged at two different locations, namely, at Charangpat Mayai Leikai Community Hall and Athokpam organised by CADA in association with Thoubal District United Women’s Development Organisation (Thoubal Ima) and Thoubal Athokpam Apunba Meira Paibi respectively.
