IMPHAL, Apr 3 : The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has criticised the Union Government for selective removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from three North-East States recently.
In a statement, NEFIS stated that AFSPA is a draconian and undemocratic law which has been actively used by the armed forces to suppress dissent and kill people with impunity.
Saying that the democratic movements in the North-East have been demanding its (AFSPA) removal, the forum continued that selective removal of AFSPA from certain areas while keeping it imposed in other areas is a step which seeks to perpetuate a divide among the people of the region.
True unity among the people and communities of the region can only be achieved when AFSPA is completely removed from the entire North-East, it added.
NEFIS then demanded demilitarization of the region and complete repeal of the draconian AFSPA from the entire North East.
