23rd Manipuri Identity Day observed

IMPHAL, May 17: The 23rd Manipuri Identity Day was observed at Gandhi Bhavan at Silchar today organised by All Assam Manipuri Students Union (AAMSU) Central Committee.
The day is observed to commemorate the protest staged by the leaders of AAMSU on May 17, 1999 at DC Office, Silchar against the ban imposed on adding Manipuri word before and after Bishnupriya community where many protesters were injured and many were even jailed.
Today's programme was attended by advisor of AAMSU, Saikhom Kamlakanta, editor of Arambai, Phuritsabam Biramani, former general secretary of AAMSU, Laishram Birkumar, general secretary of All Assam Manipuri Muslim Youth Front, Jiaur Rahman, president of All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Coordination Committee, K Aruna, president of Assam Manipuri Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, Sanathoi Devi as presidium members among others.
General secretary of AAMSU, Kabrabam Bikramjit presented the keynote address of the programme.
A lecture programme was conducted in the afternoon session where Dr ND Hodamba, Assistant Professor, Department of Manipuri, Janata College, Kabuganj spoke on the topic 'The present status of Manipuri Language in Assam and how to find means to improve it'.
While social entrepreneur Ashangbam Swapan spoke on the current scenario of Manipuri Society and former vice-president of AAMSU, Phanjoubam Lokenath delivered a lecture on the contribution of Assam in the Manipuri society in Assam.
