World Biodiversity Day observed

KAKCHING/THB/CHD, May 22 : Members of Macha Chanu Kakching carried out a tree sapling plantation drive at  Angan Ching Eco Park Kakching in connection with the observance of World Biodiversity Day today.
This drive was conducted to mitigate the increasing loss in biodiversity.
Dr N Pramodhini Devi, president Macha Chanu; N Sunita Devi, secretary and other members of Macha Chanu and Sunday Eco Club were present at today's event.
After the tree sapling plantation drive concluded, Macha Chanu Corner was opened at the Eco Park and handed over several orchid plants to members of Sunday Eco Club.
Separately District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Thoubal and DLSA, Chandel also observed the International Biodiversity day under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority today.
DLSA Thoubal observed the day through Jitsi Meet video conference at 11:30 am today.
During the event Binny Ngangom spoke on the reason for celebrating biodiversity day and elaborated on this year's slogan "Building a shared future for all life". She particularly stressed on the diminishing butterflies, fireflies and frequent migratory birds in our surroundings.
Bineshwori Maibam also elaborated on the topic of improving biodiversity as the solution to the problems faced with sustainable development, extreme climate change etc.
The event was participated by PLVs and panel lawyers, remand lawyers under the aegis of DLSA, Thoubal.
At Chandel, the day was observed as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign at Mahamani village, Chandel district.
The event started with a welcome speech from Changlo Nula Anal, para legal volunteer, DLSA Chandel meanwhile Jacky Lucy Lamkang, advocate attended as resource person.
Jacky Lucy Lamkang explained the importance of biodiversity and its impact on the environment especially in the hill areas. She further pointed out the dependency of hill people in the forest for their livelihood and its effect when over exploited.
She also explained the various legal penalties for smuggling of forest products.
The village authorities, members of village organization, local villages, students and PLVs participated in the said programme.
