Jacko, Niranjan and three others qualify for GAMMA Asian Championship

IMPHAL, Jun 21 : MMA athletes Laishram Jacko Meitei, Phanjoubam Niranjan Singh and three others from Senapati district have secured their places in the GAMMA Asian MMA Championship due to be held later this year.
Laishram Jacko Meitei and Phanjoubam Niranjan Singh and three athletes from Senapati- Besii Ariijii, Michael Rovei and Sanchui Zimik all qualified for the Asian championship after winning gold medals at the All India Mixed Martial Arts Federation (AIMMAF) National Championship held recently in Delhi's Pragati Maidan.
Laishram Jacko who trains under Roshan Maisnam at RMX MMA in Manipur bagged the gold medal in the 52 kg mixed martial arts category while Niranjan who trains at RMX MMA and at KOI Combat Academy in Bangalore under coach Vishal Seigell won the gold medal in the 65.8 kg striking MMA category.
Niranjan had also earlier represented india at GAMMA World Championship held this year at Amsterdam.
Besii Ariijii (20), son of Sani Besii of Punanamei village (Mao) meanwhile bagged gold medal in 65 kg category to qualify for the Asian Championship.
Besii Ariijii, who is a BA first year student (correspondent) has been training at Combat Athletics Training Academy (CATA), Senapati since 2018 and has featured in various competitions held in Guwahati, Bengaluru and others, reported our Senapati Correspondent.
Michael Rovei (20 years), son of Lt Eliah of Sorbung village (Poumai) in the meantime  bagged the gold medal in the 61 kg event at the National championship. Michael Rovei is also the reigning champion of Club War 15 (Amateur fighters) held at Guwahati November last year and has been receiving training at CATA Senapati since 2018, our Correspondent said.
Michael is a class 10 passed athlete who is now fully committed to sports.
Sanchui Zimik (25), son of  Thanmi Zimik of Angkailongdi village, on the other hand bagged the gold medal from 51 kg category, our Correspondent added.
The National Championship  saw participation of more than 100 athletes from across the country.
