IMPHAL, Sep 9 : The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) continues reaching out to people to make its movement demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) tag for Meitei/Meetei stronger by staging a sit in protest at Langjing Achouba Keithel, today.
The protest demonstration was staged along with volunteers of Western Star Club, Meira Paibi lups and women vendors.
Speaking to media persons, a member of Langjing Achouba Meira Paibi Lup, Sougrakpam Kamala said that they staged the democratic protest so as to make the Government realise the urgency to grant ST tag to the ethnic group whose existence has been threatened by several factors such as demographic imbalance and illegal immigrants of outsiders among others.
She urged the State Government to send the two reports (ethnography and socio economic reports of Meetei/Meitei) sought by the Centre at the earliest so that the ethnic group could get some sort of Constitutional protection like other tribes in the North East region.
Asserting that they too will launch different modes of agitation if the Government continues to ignore the demand of STDCM, Kamala stated that the people of Langjing Achouba would extend support to all initiatives taken up by the STDCM.
