Oral cancer

IMPHAL, Sep 11 : A  40 year old man with oral cancer underwent surgeries to remove the cancerous tissues and reconstruct cheeks and lips at RIMS hospital on September 7.
The patient, a manual labourer by occupation, could not afford treatment outside the State or at any of the private institutions in the State and was admitted to Plastic Surgery ward of RIMS hospital. He was diagnosed with cancer of the right cheek involving the lips.
A team of plastic surgeons led by Dr Akoijam Ibohal Singh and assisted by Dr Pebam Manisana, Dr Nehar Sinam, Dr Manish Rajpurohit and Dr Sidharth Mandal carried out the surgery at the newly constructed Modular Operation Theatre which lasted about 6 hours to remove the cancerous tissues from the cheek, lips and neck. Later on, the team successfully reconstructed the cheek and lips with free flaps taken from the left forearm (radial forearm flap).
General anaesthesia for the surgery was administered by a team led by Dr Longjam Eshori Devi and Dr Ingudam Dilip Singh while nurses M Pramod and Geetarani were the scrub nurses during the operation.
The patient was monitored strictly at Trauma ICU for 4 days and was shifted to the first floor of the newly inaugurated Burn Unit today.
