THOUBAL, Sep 25: A Chinese hand grenade was found at the verandah of one Puyam Tenden (54) of Langathel Thingel Leikai, Thoubal district under Khongjom police station at around 10.15 am today.
On receiving information about the hand grenade, a police team from Khongjom PC cordoned off the house  before a bomb disposal squad retrieved the grenade at around 2.55 pm.
Later, the grenade was set off safely at Langathel Lanngam Hill at around 3.18 pm.
Tenden is currently bed-ridden after suffering a stroke while his two sons work in a brick firm.
His eldest left home at a very young age and never came back. It is said that army personnel often came to Tenden’s house in civilian fatigue and asked if they communicated with the eldest son.
After the hand grenade was found on the verandah     this morning, some army personnel came to the house  even before the arrival of police. The army personnel reportedly told Tenden and his family that they would take away the hand grenade  and police should not be informed. But the family informed Khongjom police and the hand grenade was retrieved. Sources informed that Tenden’s eldest son has been already declared a wanted man by the NIA in connection with a deadly ambush carried out by a rebel group in which one army Major, his wife, son and some other personnel were killed.
