Sericulture Krishi Mela held

IMPHAL, Jan 31: Sericulture Krishi Mela cum Exhibition was held today at the Regional Sericulture Research Station, Imphal organised by the Regional Sericultural Research Station, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Mantripukhri.
The inaugural function was graced by Bidyarani Ayekpam, MCS, Director of the Department Sericulture, Govt of Manipur ; Th Surjaboro Singh,Manipur State Sericulture Co-operative Federation Ltd and Dr KM Vijaya Kumari, Director, Central Muga Eri Research & Training Institute, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Lahdoigarh, Jorhat (Assam) as the chief guest, guest of honour and president.
Speaking as the chief guest, Bidyarani Ayekpam expressed that the State has potential markets for silk products however there is shortage of raw materials.
To enhance silk productivity in the State, she stressed on the need of sensitizing the women folk to take up new and innovative techniques in addition to the traditional way of extracting silk.
In this regard, the Sericulture Department has a major role to play, she added.
She further informed that the new projects have been sanctioned from the Centre for silk production in Manipur which will eventually enhance production and promotion of indigenous silk products.
