IMPHAL, Jan 4 : The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union and the Editors’ Guild Manipur have strongly condemned the police picking up Hemantakumar Ningomba, Editor of Sanaleibak daily today morning.
A joint meeting of the AMWJU and EGM was held at the Manipur Press Club today at around 10 am and it strongly condemned Irilbung police picking up Hemantakumar Ningomba from his residence in the early hours today, said a statement issued by the two journalists’ bodies.
Hemantakumar is a respected Editor and is not an absconder. The manner he was picked up by the police for his statement in a panel discussion on a local TV channel affected his dignity and stature in the society. Police could have simply invited him for a discussion during office hours as no case was registered against him and was set free after some hours, said AMWJU and the EGM.
Condemning the incident, the bodies said the State Government should ensure that such “unsavory” incidents do not occur in future.
If such avoidable incidents happen again, the journalist fraternity will not take it lying down. All efforts to safeguard the journalists of the State will be taken up, including legal action, the two said.
