Unconfirmed story of Meitei couple killed goes viral Police unable to verify report

IMPHAL, Nov 13 : An unconfirmed report about alleged abduction and murder of an elderly Meitei couple at Leimatak that has gone viral on social media has made cops jump to action to confirm the status of the two and trace their whereabouts.
The couple have been identified as Pukhrambam Birchandra Singh (75) a retired staff of Leimatak Power House from Thinungei Ward No 6 and his wife Sagolsem Pishakmacha Devi (70+), according to police.
The couple were staying in Leimatak area.
According to locals of Thinungei, they lost contact with the couple five days ago and their mobile phones have been switched off.
Sources in the police said an enquiry is being made to establish their whereabouts and added there has been no specific report of any incident involving the couple.
Meiteis in the Leimatak area were evacuated twice following the May 3 violence, said police while sources claimed they were not among those evacuated.
Superintendent of Police of Bishnupur district has informed that the enquiry has not yielded any specific input.
"We have traced the unconfirmed information but no one had any specific input, not even family members. They said they heard about it at Ningthou-khong Bazar," said the SP.
The police have neither confirmed nor ruled out the rumour about the alleged abduction and killing of the two.
