Shop reduced to cinders

IMPHAL, Nov 13: In a blazing inferno, one shop cum godown located at Thangmeiband Polem Leikai was reduced to cinders early this morning.
According to information culled from the spot, a devastating fire broke out at the grocery shop of one Paonam Bahadur alias Yaima (84) of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai which also served as godown at around 2.30 am.
Even as people of the neighbourhood tried to douse the fire using water pump-sets, three LPG cylinders burst in quick succession, thus adding more fuel to the inferno. As fire tenders of Manipur Fire Service did not come even after they were informed about the inferno, one person was sent to the fire station.
Though the fire tenders arrived quite late, they managed to contain the inferno from spreading to neighbouring structures before it was finally doused.
But the local people lamented that the destruction caused by the inferno could have been reduced quite substantially had the fire tenders arrived in time.
Goods worth Rs 1.20 crore including Rs five lakh in cash have been destroyed by the inferno, according to the shop owner.
As of now, the exact cause of the inferno could not be ascertained.
