SENAPATI, Dec 10: The Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) celebrated 75 years of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) under the theme “Equality, Freedom and Justice for All” on Sunday at the conference hall of Naga Peoples’ Organization (NPO) in Senapati.
On the occasion, NPMHR launched leaflets and poster campaigns demanding withdrawal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 and slogans supporting Naga peace talk.
Posters that read “Self-determination is the only way to just peace. Unitedly let us walk the path. Support Indo-Naga peace process” were launched.
Neingulo Krome, secretary general NPMHR spoke on the Naga journey for human rights and NPMHR's early years.
NPMHR had a difficult time during the split of NSCN in 1988 that led to factional killings, said Krome narrating how the NPMHR took the lead to meet various Naga leaders including Khaplang in Myanmar, NSCN-IM leaders, Adino at London and various Naga CSOs in different places.
Krome said the NPMHR was involved in many Court cases against AFSPA and it worked for a peaceful conclusion of the Naga peace talk.
"The Naga resolved to be independent as exhibited on 14th August 1947 and the historic plebiscite of 16th May 1951. The Government of India immediately resorted to military occupation and this was followed by the repressive, oppressive and inhuman Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 that legally empowered the Indian Army to “shoot to kill” any Naga on any ground of their making," he said.
He called on all Nagas to unite and reaffirm their resolve to live as a people "through unification of all Naga areas", and live free from the clutches of "occupational forces".
Joyson Mazamo, convenor NPHMR (south) chaired the programme.
A silent prayer was held in remembrance of all Naga martyrs.
Liba Hopeson, youth and education secretary, Poumai Naga Baptist Association (PNBA) led a prayer for peace and justice.
Members of NPO, ANSAM, Naga Women Union and leaders of various communities attended the event.
