HC admits PIL on Kwatha

IMPHAL, Dec 19: The High Court of Manipur has taken up a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking intervention in a humanitarian crisis at Kwatha village in Tengnoupal district.
The PIL was filed by one Kongjengbam Chingkham of Singjamei Chingamathak  based on a report on Kwatha village, The Sangai Express carried on November 11.
The PIL informed the Court that Kwatha village, inhabited by Meiteis, has been cut off as it is surrounded by Kuki villages.
Amid the current tension between the Meiteis and the Kukis, the PIL asserted since May 3, the Kwatha villagers are unable to enter or go out of the village.
A humanitarian crisis is reported to be occurring at the Kwatha village, said the PIL.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui admitted the PIL yesterday. Advocate Naorem Umakanta Singh and his associates appeared on behalf of the petitioner. The Court will hear the PIL on January 24, 2024.
