KANGPOKPI, Feb 13 : A footballer playing for Sagolband United was killed in a road accident which took place at Nambol last night at around 10.
The deceased has been identified as Lunminthang Haokip (26) of Gamnom Sapormeina.
The accident took place while he was returning from Churachandpur with one of his locality friends on a two-wheeler vehicle.
He reportedly hit an iron structure erected along Tiddim Road near Nambol Keithel for the G-20 summit.
Lunminthang Haokip died on the way to hospital while his friend Paoboilen Kipgen (20) is said to be in critical condition at RIMS.
A case has been registered at Nambol police station.
It is said that the mortal remains of the deceased have been handed over to his family after an autopsy at RIMS morgue.
Meanwhile, the Jamsat Songtun Youth Club, one of the leading football clubs in Kangpokpi condoled the untimely demise of its former player Lunminthang Haokip.
The deceased footballer was playing for Golngai Football Club in the ongoing Zomi Namni Platinum Jubilee, one of the biggest tournaments in the Churachandpur district and he was instrumental in taking the club to the final, according to the club manager.
JSYC secretary, Thangcha Kipgen, on behalf of the club, expressed shock and condolence over the untimely demise of its former player Lunminthang Haokip and shared the pain and grief of the bereaved family.
Many football clubs, including, Golngai FC, Kuki Football Academy, United Khawzim Brothers' United, Ganggam Soccer Club, Football Players Association of Kangpokpi, Kuki Sporting Club, and various civil society organizations including KSO Sadar Hills, the organizing committee of the state level Zomi Namni-2023 Platinum Jubilee Cup, also condoled the untimely demise of the footballer.
