IMPHAL, Feb 8: Altogether 40 gold biscuits worth more than Rs 3 crore were seized by the Anti-Smuggling Unit of Customs Division, Imphal at Thamnapokpi along Imphal-Moreh highway yesterday.
Acting on a specific information that some gold biscuits would be transported in a Bolero pick-up along Imphal-Moreh highway and the vehicle would be driven by a person of thin built and wearing blue hoodie, the Anti-Smuggling Unit rushed to Thamnapokpi and waited for the particular vehicle.
At around 2 am yesterday, the team saw the particular vehicle approaching Pallel from the Tengnoupal side.
The team stopped the vehicle and took it to Customs Office, Sangakpham along with the driver who was identified as Md Umar Farauqe (32) s/o Nure of Porompat Muslim Road No 2.
After a thorough search of the vehicle, 40 gold biscuits wrapped in adhesive tape were found concealed inside the vehicle. The gold biscuits were seized apart from arresting the driver. The weight of the gold biscuits was found to be 6.640 Kgs in total and its value is estimated to be Rs 3,81,40,160. A case has been registered against Md Umar Farauqe under Section 104 of Customs Act, sources informed.
