3 held with over 5 kgs of brown sugar

IMPHAL, Mar 18 : A combined team of Bishnupur police commandos and 16 Assam Rifles arrested three persons along with 5.127 Kilograms of brown sugar from Langpok Village under Nambol police station today.
The three persons have been identified as Md Khutleibam Amirkhan (39), s/o Late Md Hellaluddin of Lilong Tairen Makhong; Md Sengamayum Nasiruddin (26), s/o Md Maniruddin of Lilong Chingkham Makha and Md Khulakpam Tenden (20), s/o Md Sallaoddin of Lilong Ushoipokpi.
5.1 kg of brown sugar would fetch over Rs 7 crore in the international market.
Sources said that the contraband was brought in a Maruti Alto having West Bengal registration number from Kakyai Langpok side towards Nambol crossing along Phadibi road.
The combined team of Bishnupur police, commandos and a column of 16 Assam Rifles rushed to the spot on receiving input about transportation of the banned drug items along Phadibi road and carried out an intensified frisking and checking drive near Langpok village, the sources said and added that one  Maruti Alto proceeding from Kakyai Langpok towards Nambol crossing was detained for verification. On spot verification, the driver and two occupants were detained and they were identified later.
From their possession, one black bag containing five packets of polythene filled with powdery substances was found concealed behind the driver seat.
The driver and the occupants disclosed that they were transporting brown sugar given  by one James of Yaingangpokpi. The seized brown sugar was to be sold to prospective buyers in and around Nambol areas, it claimed.
Hence, the brown sugar was seized in the presence of an Executive Magistrate by observing necessary formalities.
Three of them have been handed over to Nambol police station along with the seized item.
