Truckers assaulted

IMPHAL, Mar 30 : Five bikers physically assaulted four drivers last night around 10 o'clock at Korouhanba Oil Pump Complex located at Moidangpok.
The perpetrators also snatched three mobile handsets from the drivers who were headed towards Imphal from Silchar on wheat laden trucks. The four drivers have been identified as Amrul Islam Choudhury, Jaharul Islam, Hanifuddin Laskar and Abdul Wahab.
The four had stopped at Korouhanba Oil Pump Complex to have their dinner when they were attacked by the five unknown assailants. The five are reportedly believed to be local hoodlums.
Speaking in connection with the incident, Amrul Islam Choudhury stated that the five men first asked for the owner of the oil pump. Following this, they issued threats to the drivers and snatched their mobile handsets and proceeded to mess up their dinner. They further told the four drivers to remain tight-lipped about the incident threatening them.
He added that after the violent incident, they visited the office of Manipur Driver Association at Keithelmanbi where they narrated the incident. The leaders of MDA extended their help to the drivers and Amrul Islam Choudhury conveyed his gratitude to the Association for their efforts.
MDA general secretary, Sanjay Kshetrimayum said that this is not the first instance of attacks carried out on drivers. He appealed for an end to such violent acts on drivers who work day and night for the public.
Adding that MDA had filed a police complaint in this regard, he called upon the police to apprehend the culprits at the earliest. He also appealed for the help and support of the public to ensure that such assaults on drivers do not happen again in the future.
