BPR, Jun 16 : Amid the ongoing clash between Meiteis and Kukis, people of Gwantabi has expressed utmost concern over the construction of bunkers by Kuki militants on Gwantabi hill adjoining Chairel Mangjil and Leingang and demanded removal of the bunkers at the earliest.
Protesting the installation of new bunkers, people of Kumbi AC and Sugnu AC stormed the Bishnupur DC office today.
Security who were already deployed at the DC office tried their best to stop the people but failed and eventually few select leaders were allowed to meet the DC L Bikram at the latter's conference hall.
During the meeting which lasted nearly two hours, representatives of the people urged the DC to pay heed to their demands and do the needful to prevent more threats to the people. Notably the people of the Kumbi AC are still living in fear with bunkers being built on Tangjeng hill.
After the meeting, former president of Chairen Mangjil Youth Club Sorokhaibam Manimatum Singh said people of Napat and Tangjeng were forced to flee after Kuki militants carried out arson and gun attacks in the intervening night of May 27 and 28.
The militants have built bunkers in the said areas and have been constantly attacking neighbouring Meitei settlements and killing some villagers, he said.
In the name of securing the area many CAPF personnel have been deployed. Instead of restoring order in the area, the CAPF personnel have done nothing, he said. Further, the number of bunkers along the hill range surrounding the place has been growing rapidly and has reached near Leingang Area despite the presence of CAPF personnel rendering many people uneasy, he said.
The people are extremely unhappy and gripped by fear with the presence of bunkers in hills overlooking the settlements. The DC has however assured to remove the bunkers within Jun 19, he said while warning of more intense form of agitation if the bunkers are not removed as assured.
