Child with 3 heart holes operated at SKY Hospital

A baby from Ukhrul, 7 months old but weighs only 4 Kg having Chromosomal Anomaly-Trisomy-21 and 3 holes in the heart namely Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), causing recurrent heart failures, sever pulmonary hypertension and recurrent pneumonias underwent a very high risk open heart surgery at SKY Hospital, Imphal on April 25, 2023.
The very high risk operation was jointly conducted by Specialist Teams of Novick Cardiac Alliance, USA and Heart Team of SKY Hospital, led by Senior Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Vitaly Dedovich, said a release issued by SKY Hospital & Research Centre Pvt Ltd.
The operation started at 9.35 am and finished at 1.05 pm. The baby was not going to survive without this high risk open heart surgery to close the heart holes.
The initial post-operative clinical course was stormy and critical requiring all vital organs support with pacemaker supporting heart along with multiple inotropic drugs (NCA regime), Ventilator support for lung function, peritoneal dialysis for kidney function support (with NCA, USA technique).
With 24x7 intensive care in the ultra-modern post-operative ITU of SKY Hospital, the baby's condition started to improve. All life supports were withdrawn on post-op Day 9. The patient started to eat & drink and was ready for discharge on Day 11 of the operation.
Dr L Shyamkishore Singh, Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital expressed his happiness on the success of this very high risk life saving operation of the baby.
He also thanked the visiting team of Novick Cardiac Alliance, USA for their generosity and selfless life saving service for such small children of Manipur & other Northeastern states of India during the 14 days long Free Children Heart Surgery Camp with effect from April 17, 2023, when 18 children from Northeastern India were operated with 100 percent success rate.
He further appealed to the people of Manipur and other Northeastern states of India to avail the benefits of such heart surgery camp being organised at SKY Hospital 2-3 times a year in addition to its routine cardiac CTVS service.
