IMPHAL, Sep 18: An 85-year old man living in the prefabricated house built by the Government for displaced people at Sajiwa died today.
The deceased was one Mayengbam Birchon Meitei. Birchon was living in the prefabricated house along with his family after their house at Ikou was burnt down by Kuki militants.
On learning about the demise of Birchon, Khundrakpam AC MLA Thokchom Lokeshwor came to Sajiwa and joined the last rites of the deceased.
There, the Congress ML expressed strong resentment against the Government’s failure to take up concrete action for resettlement of displaced people at their original villages.
After all the Meitei houses of Ikou were ransacked, looted and burnt down by Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists on May 3, the Meitei villagers have been living like refugees in their own land.
Mayengbam Birchon had no medical problems. He might have died due to mental agony caused by displacement from his own home, Lokeshwor said.
He said that Birchon’s body would be cremated at Sajiwa as per the wish of the fellow occupants of the prefabricated house.
He then urged Chief Minister N Biren to act boldly so as to end the crisis within the month of September.
The Congress MLA further asked the Chief Minister to join the 34 ruling MLAs at Delhi and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Manipur crisis and take steps for tackling and defeating the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists.
