IMPHAL, Oct 2 : The Adhoc Committee of All Manipur Elected PRIs of 2017 has urged the State Government to either hold the 6th Gram Panchayat election or let the elected members of Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) continue to work.
Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club today, Committee chairman Pheiroijam Heramani said that the term of the 5th Gram Panchayat had ended nearly two years back in October 2022.
In other words, there has been no democracy at the grassroot level for nearly 24 months in Manipur, he added.
Not holding elections for Gram Panchayat is akin to abolishing the Panchayati system itself, Heramani continued.
Saying that the Cabinet announced to conduct the Gram Panchayat election in September recently but the election wasn't held, he asked the Government to refrain from giving empty assurances.
The Government hasn't taken up any initiative to hold the election anytime soon, he said while urging the Government to either issue the notification to hold the 6th Gram Panchayat election or let the elected members of the elected PRIs continue to work.
