IMPHAL, Oct 1 : Incessant rains triggered landslides at Awangkhul and Rengpang in Noney along Imphal-Jiribam road, blocking the highway stretch at the two places.
It is reported that only unloaded trucks can pass through Awangkhul while Rengpang remains unfit for both loaded and unloaded trucks to traverse.
NHIDCL, nonetheless, is clearing the debris in both the landslide hit areas.
It is further reported that several trucks carrying essentials and petroleum products coming from Jiribam side are stranded at Kambiron in Tamenglong due to the landslides.
Empty tanker trucks which left Imphal yesterday, however, have reached Jiribam today.
Our Noney correspondent, on the other hand, said that many Inter Village Roads in Noney have been damaged by the landslides.
While a minor landslide took place between Longmai and Tupul and Charoi Pandongba and K Senaam Village, major landslides occurred at Lukhambi and Awangkhul villages at around 5.30 am today.
The debris of the landslide at Lukhambi was cleared at around 2 pm.
Debris clearance work is also underway at Awangkhul and light vehicles started passing the area at around 4.30 pm.
It is said that many houses at Noney District Headquarters have been damaged and the area got flooded due to faulty drainage system.
Regarding the matter, the Longmai Bazar Board, youth clubs and the village councils of Longmai area urged the Government and relevant authority to look into the matter with utmost seriousness.
They also said the construction of drains and culverts at Noney has been delayed by NHIDCL due to non release of the compensation amount for some affected houses.
Meanwhile, DIPR reported that heavy rains have been pouring at Longmai Bazar in Noney since 1 am yesterday and Longmai Town and adjacent areas have started flooding.
Power outages and electricity failures have also been reported from the areas, compounding the difficulties being faced by the residents.
According to weather reports, Noney's weather is expected to be increasingly unstable.
