Waikhom Sonia grabs gold for MU at All India Inter University Fencing Championship

IMPHAL, Nov 8 : Waikhom Sonia won a gold and a bronze medal for Manipur University at the Inter University Fencing Championship being hosted by University of Jammu under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities.
Sonia, a fourth semester student of BPES at Kakching Khunou College, won the gold medal in the women's individual foil event while the bronze medal came in the team event.
Sonia defeated seasoned Manipuri athlete representing Guru Kashi University, Naorem Mina by 16-6 points in the individual final to seal the gold medal.
Earlier in the semi-final, Sonia defeated another Manipuri fencer, Alice of Guru Nanak University by 15-10 points to book her final ticket.
Meanwhile, the team of Sonia, Khangembam Anjali of Biramangol College, Kharibam Debita of Manipur College and Huiningshumba Bala of Standard College bagged a bronze medal as they slumped to a 9-15 semi-final loss to Guru Kashi University, Bhatia, Punjab.
Earlier, the MU team reached the semi-final with a 15-4 win over National Sports University, Imphal.
