IMPHAL, Mar 24: Republican Party of India (RPI) National secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam and actor Rajkumar Somendro alias Kaiku have joined the fight for Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.
Maheshwar made a public announcement at his Keishampat residence today that he would fight the Lok Sabha elections in Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency on RPI ticket.
Meanwhile, the Election Committee of Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has decided to nominate Rajkumar Somendro Singh alias Kaiku as the official candidate of MPP for the ensuing 18th Lok Sabha election in Inner Manipur PC, according to a press release issued by the MPP president.
Maheshwar said that he is fighting the election with the ideology of protecting Manipur.
Elections will come and go but the 11 months old violent conflict has not yet ended, he said.
“I have seen the suffering of people on account of the protracted violent conflict. A political solution is a must if the people’s plight must be addressed effectively. That is why I’m contesting the Lok Sabha election. I decided to fight the election in order to save Manipur”, Maheshwar said.
Election is not a celebration or festival but the election is now a medium to bring a solution to the protracted crisis, he said.
“Let us check use of unfair means in the election. Let us not resort to mud-slinging in the name of the election. Let the people choose their representative in a free and fair manner”, he said.
Maheshwar Thounaojam said that protecting the interest of Manipur is more important than the party’s (RPI) ideology. He added that he joined RPI by strictly abiding by his own ethics and principles.
