Thunderstorm wreaks havoc

IMPHAL, Apr 17: A severe thunderstorm in the day that hit several places across Manipur has damaged several houses at Thamnapokpi, Sanasabi and Waiton areas, said Indian Red Cross Society.
Volunteers of the Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch and Imphal East branch have visited the places and taken stock of the damage.
As immediate relief, the victims have been provided with materials including tarpaulins and hygienic products, said the Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch in a statement.
RCS Manipur State Branch chairman Narendra Ningomba, vice chairman Dr Laishram Manglem, honorary secretary Athokpam Nabachandra and treasurer Premjit Naoroibam were part of the team that inspected the places.
Notably, several places across Manipur were hit by moderate to severe rain with hailstorms in the day today.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued warnings and predicted persistent cyclonic circulations and rainfall in the North East region including Manipur for five days.
According to the IMD, the NE region including Manipur may face light to moderate rainfall in the coming days.
