IMPHAL, Apr 18 : The Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) has urged CSOs, meira paibis and human rights organisations of the State to come together to protect the village volunteers who put their lives on the line to safeguard their villages.
A statement issued by MC Meetei, coordinator, MIYC highlighted the contribution of these village volunteers and asserted that without them Manipur might have come under the thumbs of Kukis.
The MIYC statement went on to claim that the united front that was painstakingly built in response to the Kuki aggression on Manipur has been dismantled by the 18th Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
The impending polls which have set people at odds with each other cannot be considered as the collective voice of the people, added MIYC.
Elaborating on this, the statement pointed out that under the military rule brought on by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 as well as the ongoing "war", there is no scope for the 18th Lok Sabha Elections 2024 to be conducted in a free, fair and democratic manner.
MIYC also accused that post independence the India Government has always attempted to disintegrate Manipur. MIYC took stock of the Bangkok Declaration (2001) by the BJP led NDA Government which led to the burning down of the Manipur Assembly and the death of eighteen people.
Currently, the conflict which has ravaged the State since May 2023 has been left on the boil by the India Government despite BJP being in power both at the Centre and the State, maintained MIYC.
Addressing the grave situation in the State, MIYC also took aims at the restricted freedom of press, lack of democratic spaces and suppression of human rights activities.
Advocating for a political culture that prioritizes peoples' welfare instead of slandering one's opponents relentlessly,  the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) has called upon the people to mould worthy, courageous, educated and farsighted leaders.
