IMPHAL, Apr 23 : After a lull of some days, Kuki militants launched fresh attacks on Meitei villages of Awang Sekmai, Imphal West district this morning.
Heavily armed Kuki militants unleashed volleys of fire from Phailen Kuki village toward Meitei villagers who were working at Sekmai River at around 11 am, sources said.
The unarmed Meitei villagers fled from the spot and took shelter in a safe area nearby.
Nonetheless, village volunteers who have been guarding the Meitei villages since the beginning of the conflict retaliated by opening fire toward the Kuki militants and thus prevented the Kuki militants from advancing toward Meitei villages.
Soon after the incident, a team of Imphal West commandos and personnel of Sekmai police station rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation in the area.
Later at around 2 pm, Kuki militants again attacked Meitei villages from the same hill range.
In response to the attack, security personnel and village volunteers fired back, and the gun fight lasted till evening.
There is no report of any injury on the side of village volunteers and security personnel during the attack by Kuki militants. The situation was quite tense in the area till the time of filing this report. Village volunteers and security personnel deployed in the area have been maintaining a strict vigil to defend the villages from further possible attacks by Kuki militants, the sources added.
