IMPHAL, Apr 25 : Security forces foiled an 'innovative' and novel attempt to smuggle brown sugar by concealing them inside pumpkins.
The contraband item concealed inside pumpkins was recovered from an Assam bound vehicle at Kunjabond along JT road yesterday and two persons were also arrested.
The duo were arrested by a team of Jiribam police and 39 Assam Rifles and they, both from Cachar, Assam, have been identified as Abdul Mannam Mazumder (31) s/o (L) Abdul Jalil Mazumder and Khalil Ulla Barbhuiya (26) s/o Monir Uddin Barbhuiya.
The two drug peddlers were trying to smuggle the brown sugar weighing 363.45 grams by concealing them inside pumpkins.
The combined team carried out a random frisking and checking drive at Kunjabond yesterday during which one pick-up truck (Mahindra Bolero) coming from Tipaimukh toward Cachar was detained, sources said.
The vehicle was found loaded with bananas beneath which some pumpkins with cut marks were found concealed on checking, said the source and added that the brown sugar was found concealed inside six pumpkins.
The driver Abdul Mannam Mazumder and the other occupant Khalil Ulla Barbhuiya were arrested on the spot and the brown sugar was seized by observing formalities and the same was handed over to the Jiribam police station along with the pick-up truck, said the sources.
