The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has announced that it will launch a series of agitation urging the Government to issue residential pattas to indigenous Meitei people who do not possess this important document.
A statement issued by Matum Churamani, secretary, MMTU claimed that there are thousands of households in five valley districts of the State which do not have residential pattas for their homesteads.
Recently MMTU visited numerous families in similar predicament and discussed the multifaceted problems they encounter as a result of not having their land deed.
The MMTU statement asserted that these people do not have access to Government schemes/benefits/loans which necessitate submission of one's residential patta. In addition, many poor bright minds miss out on various educational opportunities such as free education offered at certain schools.
More recently, recruitment notices were issued by many departments prior to the 18th Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
Stating that applying for some of the vacancies required submission of the latest land tax payment receipt, MMTU questioned if the youths who do not possess their residential patta, let alone the land tax payment receipt, be forced to give up.
At this juncture, MMTU pointed out that communities from the hill areas who do not need such documents would evidently grab this golden opportunity.
Accusing the Revenue Department of being insincere and indulging in corrupt practices, MMTU alleged that many empty Khas Land (wasteland/estate) have been turned into patta land in collusion with the elites.
Asserting that MMTU has made preparations to launch agitations demanding pattas from the Government, the Union has urged the families who do not have this document to join their movement.
