Anti-drug drive comes under mob attack

Moirang, Apr 25 : A mob attacked a group of anti-drug campaigners at Kwakta in Bishnupur today and a vehicle (Maruti Gypsy) was set on fire.
It is said that seven volunteers of Anti-Drug Cam- paign (ADC), Bishnupur went to Kwakta while tracing one drug supplier but they were confronted by the mob.
On seeing the mob, six of the volunteers fled from the area but the person who drove the Gypsy namely Khundrakpam Joy (27), a resident of Ningthoukhong Ward no 6, was rounded up and thrashed by the mob. Later , the mob torched the vehicle.
Joy was rescued by the police.
According to a report culled from the spot, some groups served monetary demands to some private schools at Kwakta and the locals confronted the volunteers of ADC as they thought them to be the members of the groups.
According to police, volunteers of ADC nabbed one 18 year old drug user along with drugs from Ningthoukhong Bazar today at around 10 am today.
Saying that the drug user disclosed from whom he bought the drug and the name of one Wasif emerged, the police informed that the volunteers of ADC tried to nab Wasif by letting the drug user communicate with the drug supplier.
Wasif, however, fled on seeing the anti-drug campaigners by abandoning his vehicle (Suzuki Access), the police said and added that the volunteers chased after the drug supplier but they were confronted by a mob without knowing what was happening.
On seeing the mob, six volunteers of ADC fled from the area but Joy couldn't join his companions and he was rounded  up by the mob, it added.
The mob thrashed Joy and also torched the Gypsy which he drove.
To control the situation, a team of Phougakchao Ikhai police rushed to the site and found Joy grievously injured.
A team of Additional SP (L&O) also arrived at the area and brought out Joy up to Kwakta Bazar in a bullet proof vehicle along with a large number of people.
At Kwakta Bazar, the police team was intercepted by a large number of people and demanded that Joy be brought out from the  vehicle.
The source said that the mob pelted stones at the police, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells and some rounds of bullets in the air.
The situation was brought under control after Bishnupur SP  Ravikumar arrived at the site of the incident along with more security personnel including RAF.
