IMPHAL, Apr 26 : Owing to the growing popularity of Manipuri turmeric in the rest of India, 6 metric tonnes of dry organic turmeric flakes were flagged off for Mumbai and Andaman from Economic and Research Development Organisation (ERDO) ground at Mantripukhri today.
The truckload of turmeric flakes were jointly flagged off by Ngangom Bishal Singh, Assistant Project Officer, Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) and Takhellambam Sanajaoba, president, ERDO. The turmeric for this purpose was procured by ERDO from four Farmers Producers Company (FPC), namely, Sandai Faum FPC Ukhrul, Haoram FPC Ukhrul, Tuasam FPC Noney and DSSS Mantripukhri. Speaking on the occasion Ngangom Bishal Singh spoke about the growing demand for organic Manipuri turmeric by pharmaceutical companies and other agencies in India. Meanwhile, Takhellambam Sanajaoba highlighted the superior quality of Manipuri turmeric as it contains  6.5 to 7% curcumin. As a result, their demand has been steadily increasing outside the State. Preparations are underway to send 9 metric tonnes of ginger produced by local organic farmers to other States soon, he maintained.
