IMPHAL, Apr 28: With a sinister intention to attack Meitei villages of Sugnu, Serou etc, a large group of Kukis have been working to build a wooden bridge over Manipur River.
Notably, Manipur River flows at the tri-junction of Kakching district, Chandel district and Churachandpur district.
According to information received by The Sangai Express, a large number of Kuki ‘volunteers’ have been working to build a bridge over Manipur River at Thingangphai Ukon, located close to the premises of Nungthong Lairembi, which is deeply revered by the Meiteis of Serou.
The Kuki ‘volunteers’ working to build the bridge are being guarded by armed Kuki militants.
Across Thingangphai, there are many Kuki villages like Biyang and Tayang where large number of Kuki militants have been camping.
Kuki ‘volunteers’ coming at these villages have been working to build a wooden bridge over Manipur River which would be fit for light vehicles like jeeps and cars.
Some people of Serou said that the Kuki ‘volunteers’ and militants have been working to build a wooden bridge with an apparent intention to attack Meitei villages of Serou and Sugnu.
As Manipur River poses a formidable hurdle to the movement of Kuki militants in motor vehicles towards Meitei villages, the Kuki 'volunteers' have been working to build a bridge fit enough for light vehicles like jeeps and cars, the villagers said.
If the bridge is constructed and Kuki militants moving in vehicles can reach Thingangphai, Kekru-pokpi, Kangvai, Yanglen villages etc, Meitei villages located in the peripheral areas of Kakching and Bishnupur districts would be rendered highly vulnerable, they said.
Although Kuki ‘volunteers’ had started construc- ting the wooden bridge, the same work has been halted after the Chandel Deputy Commissioner issued a notification whereby construc- tion of the particular bridge is prohibited, sources said.
