Assam Unit of WMC lines up May 19 protest

IMPHAL, May 9 : The World Meetei Council (WMC), Assam State Unit has resolved to stage a sit-in protest at Manipuri Basti Rajbari, Guwahati on May 19 demanding Chief Minister N Biren Singh to send the ethnographic and latest socio-economic report to the Centre for inclusion of Meeteis in the Scheduled Tribe list at the earliest.
The resolution was passed during a meeting of WMC Assam State Unit Executive Committee held yesterday, said a statement issued by L Pankaj Singh, general secretary, WMC Assam Unit.
Stating that similar reports have been sent to the Centre for inclusion of important communities of Assam in the ST list, WMC Assam questioned what will be the fate of Meetei community without such a Constitutional safeguard.
In addition, WMC Assam shared that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had assured to accord ST status to Meeteis in Assam as soon as Meeteis of Manipur are included in the ST list.
Highlighting the precarious situation of Assamese Meeteis as well as in consideration of Meetei identity and future prospects, WMC Assam has urged the Chief Minister to send the two reports swiftly.
Lastly, WMC Assam has appealed to the Meetei community in Assam to participate in the May 19 sit-in protest.
