IMPHAL, May 19 : The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur on Saturday launched a 'Mass campaign for early settlement of the prevailing crisis in Manipur through political solutions' at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
The launching event was graced by socio-political commentator Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma; Manipur University, Associate Professor, Chinglen Maisnam and AITUC general secretary Laishram Sotinkumar among others.
Speaking on the occasion, L Sotinkumar said that the prolonged conflict which began on May 3, 2023 has led to the irreparable loss of many precious lives and displaced thousands of people across the State.
Dencouning the failure of the State & Central Government to end the conflict even after one year, he asserted that due to the BJP led Government's lack of political will, there has been no settlement and more than 60,000 displaced people are still unable to return to their native places.
Highlighting the frequent imposition of economic blockades along NH-2 and NH-37, extortion and atrocities inflicted upon truck drivers and handymen, L Sotinkumar called for immediate deployment of Highway Protection Force to safeguard the truck drivers and handymen plying along these highways.
Appealing to the Labour Department to take a decision to increase the monthly wages of private sector employees to Rs 26000, L Sotinkumar said employees working in the private sector including drivers and journalists are facing a lot of difficulties to maintain their family due to low wages.
