Department of Sports Medicine at RIMS becomes full-fledged

The Department of Sports Medicine at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has become a full fledged department and a formal notification in this regard has been issued by the Director of RIMS yesterday.
A press note issued by Prof Dr Akoijam Joy of the Department of Sports Medicine said that the development was approved during an executive council meeting of the Ministry of Health on March 8 at Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi.
The Department of Sports Medicine at RIMS was started in 2020 as a flagship project of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the country, it said.
The Department is among 8 Sports Medicine Departments that offer MD Course in Sports Medicine under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the first successful MD student was produced in June last year, it said.
PhD programme in Sports Medicine will start in June 2024 and high-performance Sports Sciences facilities will be available soon, it said.
Given its importance in enhancing sporting performance, the department strives to develop as a centre of excellence in Sports Medicine in the country, it continued.
