IMPHAL, May 23: COCOMI Farmers' Wing has appealed to the State Government to deploy security forces for security of farmers in sensitive areas of the peripheries of the valley.
The Kuki militants' onslaught, even after a year, has not ended and as such people, especially farmers in the peripheries are not safe while carrying out agriculture activities, it said in a statement.
Notably, hectares of agricultural land were left unattended at the peripheries of the valley due to rampant attacks on farmers tending fields.
The farmers still have fear and insecurity. They want to tend to their fields, but are scared of possible attacks on them. Steps must be taken up to instill a sense of security among the farmers, if not agricultural land will be wasted like last year, said COCOMI Farmers' Wing.
To minutely discuss the issues farmers are facing and put pressure on the State Government to take up immediate actions, a meeting will be organised on Wednesday, May 29 at 11 am at Manipur Press Club, Imphal. The meeting will be attended by representatives of farmers' organisations, it said.
While COCOMI is taking up efforts to station village volunteers in sensitive farming areas, the Government, it said, should deploy security forces for allowing farmers to safely and securely tend to their fields.
