IMPHAL, May 6: The Department of Veterinary and Husbandry has started assessing damages caused to livestock and poultry farms by the hailstorm yesterday, said Dr RK Khogendrajit, Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services.
Speaking to reporters at his office at Sanjenthong today, the Director said the district veterinary officers have been instructed to collect damage reports.
The assessment is being carried out under the guidance of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Minister Khashim Vashum and the Department's Secretary, Michael Achom, he added.
While the assessment is being done, the Government is deciding on the relief, he said.
RK Khogendrajit said the hailstorm didn't affect a poultry farm at Ningthoukhong and duck breeding farm at Lamphelpat yesterday, but severely damaged the Central Poultry Farm at Khumbong.
The Khumbong farm had 5 sheds housing around 1000  birds. The hailstorm damaged three sheds, he said, adding the birds have been shifted to a safer location.
While the veterinary officers have been instructed to assess the damage in districts, the extent of the damage will be known tomorrow, he said.
Besides natural calamities causing damage to livestock and poultry farms, the rainy season will bring many diseases that may threaten the lives of cattle, pigs, and birds.
To cover losses in case of a disaster, farmers should avail livestock insurance without fail, he said.
The Director informed that a Rs 1 lakh worth insurance would cost farmers only Rs 1,050 a year.
In case of a disaster that is covered by the insurance, farmers may get compensated Rs 80,000 easily, he added.
