MOIRANG, May 8 : A displaced person from Churachandpur has been left with serious injuries after he was shot by unknown miscreants at Thanga in Bishnupur today at around 8 am.
The injured has been identified as Sawaijam Dhanabir Meetei (28), s/o S Rajen of Churachandpur Yaifakol and he is an inmate of the relief camp set up at Thanga Wangma High School.
It is reported that Dhanabir was hit by four bullets and he has been taken to Raj Medicity.
According to police, the unknown miscreants came in a moped (Honda Activa) and opened fire at Dhanabir who was coming in a silver coloured Eon car in front of the relief camp set up at Thanga Moirangthem Leikai at around 8 am.
The miscreants fled after firing multiple rounds.
A case has been registered at Keibul Lamjao police station regarding the incident and a probe is underway, the police said.
Denouncing the attack, All Thanga People’s Organization (ATPO), Thanga Apunba Meirapaibi Lup and inmates of the relief camp staged a protest demonstration at Thanga.
Thanga AC MLA T Robindro also came to the protest site and interacted with the protesters.
Placards with inscription "We strongly condemn today's gun firing incident" and "Government should take immediate action against the culprits" were displayed during the protest among others.
Speaking to the media by the sideline, Thanga Apunba Meira Paibi Lup convenor Thambalmana Devi said that leaving an inmate of a relief camp with bullet injuries was inhuman no matter what wrongs he may have done.
Urging the Government to book the culprit at the earliest, she said that they will launch a stern  agitation if there is no positive response from the Government.
ATPO publicity secretary Tongbram Rambal, on the other hand, appealed to all concerned to not attack the people taking refuge at relief camps ever again.
Laishram Enaobi, an inmate of the same relief camp who is also from Churachandpur Yaifakol, said that today's firing incident has made them (displaced people) feel unsafe.
