IMPHAL, Jan 9: The Indigenous People's Forum Manipur (IPFM) has strongly condemned the deplorable act of violence and intimidation perpetrated by Kuki miscreants against a Naga woman from K Lungwiram village.
The incident occurred on January 7 while the woman was overseeing land levelling work in the village, located just 2 Km from Leimakhong Army Cantonment.
In a statement issued by its president Ashang Kasar, IPFM said a group of approximately 20 aggressive Kuki individuals obstructed the work, verbally abused the villagers, and physically assaulted the woman.
She was thrown to the ground, manhandled, and subjected to threats and intimidation. The mob destroyed her mobile phone, and the situation was further aggravated with the arrival of a larger group of over 100 Kuki youths, who issued threats to burn an excavator used in the work and harm Naga villagers, said IPFM.
Video evidence has surfaced, clearly depicting Kuki individuals verbally harassing the villagers, using profanities and threatening their safety. The victim, along with other witnesses, reported the mob’s unruly behaviour and their deliberate obstruction. This heinous act highlights a blatant disregard for peace and mutual respect. Such actions cannot and must not be tolerated, said IPFM.
The Kukis, who reside as tenants on Naga ancestral lands, must acknowledge and respect the rights and dignity of the landowners, it asserted.
Terming the incident unacceptable, IPFM said the district administration and law enforcement agencies must take up immediate actions to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Further, the safety and protection of the Naga villagers of K Lungwiram should be assured at the earliest, added IPFM.
