IMPHAL, Sep 30 : A chaotic scene unfolded at Khewa Phurju in Imphal East's Khundrakpam Constituency today when police personnel in plainclothes attempted to apprehend a local resident.
The situation escalated as a furious mob confronted them, resulting in the vandalization of the two vehicles used by the plainclothes individuals. It is reported that the vehicles (one Hyundai i20 and a Maruti Baleno) didn't have any registration number on them. According to reports culled from the spot, the incident took place around 10.40 am when the locals of Khewa Phurju were engaged in MGNREGA works.
As the two vehicles were seen moving around the area in  a suspicious manner, the locals stopped them and inquired about their purpose.
The individuals in plainclothes revealed that they had come to seize drugs, which sparked the confrontation.
According to reports, the locals not only vandalized the two vehicles but also assaulted the occupants who fled into the 7 MR  campus.
After the incident, additional security personnel arrived and took away the vehicles.
No further untoward incidents have been reported.
Some police uniforms were discovered inside the vehicles, and it later emerged that the plainclothes individuals were special commando personnel, said a local.
He claimed that the individual the police were attempting to arrest is a former village volunteer who now makes a living by growing vegetables.
