IMPHAL, Oct 9 : Social Welfare Director Dr N Bino has urged everyone to ensure all children up to age 5 are vaccinated during the Sub-National Polio Immunization Day, scheduled from October 12 to 14.
During a press briefing at the Directorate of Family Welfare Services at Thangal Keithel, Dr Bino noted that the last reported case of polio in India was at Kolkata in 2011.
However, she cautioned that new polio cases could emerge in India, as neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar are experiencing a rise in polio cases.
Stating that the Government has been conducting Pulse Polio Immunization and Intensified Polio Immunization campaigns Nationwide, she added that the Sub-National Polio Immunization Day will target vulnerable districts but will encompass all districts in Manipur as the State shares a border with Myanmar.
Dr N Bino announced that polio immunization will be conducted at booths on the first day of the programme, with the following two days, October 13 and 14, dedicated to vaccinating children who were missed.
The programme aims to cover all 3,16,671 children by setting up 3,167 booths, she said and added that 633 supervisors and 15,833 vaccinators have been selected for the task.
Saying that polio is incurable, Dr Bino added that immunization is the only way to prevent polio.
