IMPHAL, Oct 10 : The World Meitei Organisation (WMO) has stated that the demolition of the Red Land building (Manipur Rajbari) at Shillong, Meghalaya, was an attempt to erase a significant chapter of Manipur's history.
The WMO, in a press note, condemned the demolition of the historic bungalow where the Merger Agreement was signed between Maharaj Bodhachandra and the Indian Union on September 21, 1949.
The Organisation, questioning the motive behind the demolition of the Manipur Rajbari, asserted that the property historically belonged to the Manipur kings.
The demolition of the important building has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Manipuri people, it added.
Noting that the Meghalaya Government transferred the Manipur Rajbari to the Manipur Government on August 12, 2021, recognizing its historical significance to the State, the WMO said that the demolition, however, undermines Manipur’s history and its cultural heritage.
The Government of Manipur is answerable to the people for the demolition of the important structure, the Organisation said and added that the department concerned must tender an apology, reconstruct the Red Land building and hand it over to the people.
