IMPHAL, Oct 11: The XXVII Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State Chapter (ASIMANICON 2025), was launched at the Jubilee Hall, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal today.
Launched under the theme “Advancing Surgical Frontiers: Innovations and Challenges,” the programme was attended by Dr N Hemantakumar Singh, Director of Manipur Health Services.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Hemantakumar  highlighted that advances in robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine are transforming healthcare to improve outcomes and accessibility.
In Manipur, 10-bed ICUs in 60 districts under the SPOC-Hub telemedicine model have treated over 7,000 critically ill patients, reducing the burden on tertiary hospitals, he said.
Cases of kidney related illnesses are increasing in Manipur. The seven District Hospitals alone have so far performed 33,000 dialysis treatments, he said.
The State has only one stroke ready hospital in the private sector, as such efforts are being made to plug the gap by services such as tele-cardiology and tele-stroke, forms of telemedicine that use telecommunications to provide remote cardiac and neurological care respectively.
He further informed that steps are being taken up to tie up with Tata Memorial Hospital to launch tele-oncology facility at Churachandpur and Thoubal once a week.
Ensuring equitable access, building trust, maintaining quality care, and promoting early diagnosis through initiatives like Ayushman Arogya Mandir remain crucial, he added.
Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS Imphal, in his address, stated that the conference showcases the State’s progress in surgical innovation while addressing ethical, educational, and infrastructure challenges in North East India.
He noted that RIMS symbolizes regional excellence meeting global standards, promoting collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation to bridge healthcare gaps.
He urged young surgeons to draw inspiration from the event to shape the future of surgery in India.
As part of the conference, the Department of Sports Medicine, RIMS Imphal, organised a hands-on workshop on "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Sports Injuries: Diagnostic & Interventional Applications" at its Operation Theatre Complex.
