Gandhi Jayanti : State observes National Cleanliness Day

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla graced the observance of National Cleanliness Day/Swachh Bharat Diwas at Gandhi Memorial Hall, here, today to commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Governor led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Satyabrata, former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, MLAs, Chief Secretary PK Goel, DGP Rajiv Singh, senior civil and police officials, and public also paid their respects to the Father of the Nation.
Addressing the function, the Governor said that Mahatma Gandhi was not only a leader who struggled for India’s independence but also a visionary who believed in a world built on the pillars of truth, nonviolence, and self-reliance.
“These timeless principles, which are the epitome of his philosophy of Satyagraha, are as relevant today as they were during India’s struggle,” he stated.
The Governor urged the people of Manipur to strive to be responsible citizens who not only respect their environment but also actively contribute to its betterment.
"As we move forward with this vision of a clean, self-reliant, and united India, let’s remember Gandhiji’s words: ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world," the Governor added.
“Let us be that change for ourselves and for our future generations. Together, we can build a stronger, cleaner, and more prosperous Manipur, a Manipur that truly embodies the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi and its rich history,” he said.
The Governor added that initiatives like Make in India are giving new opportunities to the youth of Manipur, with local indigenous products and handloom gaining recognition while creating livelihoods.
Bhalla also spoke about the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission, noting that Manipur has made significant progress with local bodies improving sanitation and waste management, and that the State’s efforts have been acknowledged at the National level.
Chief Secretary PK Goel elaborated on the life, philosophy, and ideas of Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary and urged everyone to reflect upon the values he stood for and how they continue to shape our world.
“We are also celebrating the day as Swachh Bharat Diwas on Gandhi Jayanti as a way of following in his footsteps for a clean India,” he added.
As part of the observation, various cultural events were organized, including a well-choreographed dance presentation of Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram by the Government Dance College and songs by artists from Bal Mukunda Music College.
